Tanzania - 13 Days Safari
This safari is the best of everything - including incredible wildlife and offering the chance to getting to know different cultures. Meet the Maasai in their vibrant red robes and herds of cattle and the Hadzabe, one of the few remaining click speaking hunter gatherer tribes in Africa. And of course there are the vast wilderness zones of the Serengeti where you will experience so many unforgettable memories in the world’s most iconic park.
Day 1
You will be picked up from Kilimanjaro International Airport for the transfer to Moivaro Coffee Lodge in Arusha in the evening.
Day 2
We will leave Arusha after breakfast initially heading south and crossing the great Rift Valley en route to Ngorongoro. On the way up there we will have time to visit Lake Manyara National Park – a fascinating place – very different to most of the other parks in the area. It is a narrow strip of land sandwiched between the Great Rift escarpment and Lake Manyara itself. The springs at the base of the escarpment produce unique, lush groundwater forests and the lake shore offers open grazing. Whilst the park is famous for its tree climbing lions it is also home to large resident populations of elephant and giraffe. The freshwater stream feeding into the soda waters of the lake are a tremendous feeding ground for hundreds of birds from pelicans to flamingos as well as the favorite wallow of the hippo pods. We will continue to the luxurious Mysigio Camp which is located in the heart of the wonderful landscape of the Ngorongoro Highlands, offering a unique view overlooking Lake Eyasi. Enjoy your stay surrounded by an incredible nature. There are a lot of activities at this accommodation because of its location close to the Serengeti National Park and its 20 minutes drive to the Ngorongoro Crater. You can observe the wild animals during an exciting game grive or an interesting nature walk through the scenic hilly countryside. The camp is set there for nearly 20 years and during the years they built up a strong bond with the Maasai in this area. During your visit you will get to know all the traditions of the nearest Maasai village. Experience all the different visions of this mythical culture. You can rest and relax in one of the twelve spacious tents or in the mess tent after a day full of adventures.
Day 3
We will have a full day in Ngorongoro Crater - simply amazing - one of the 8th wonders of the world. Ngorongoro Crater is the largest unbroken caldera on the globe with a diameter of around 19 km. It is surrounded by very steep walls rising up to 610 m from the crater floor and once at the floor with its dense wildlife population there are great opportunities for getting close-up wildlife shots with your camera. In just a day you might have a chance to spot the big five, meaning lion, leopard, rhino, elephant, and buffalo. Furthermore it is also home to abundant wildlife like zebra, wildebeest, gazelle, velvet monkeys, hyenas, and many more. More than 150 species of birds, which do not exist in the Serengeti, are found here: ostriches, hood cranes and countless flamingos enchant the visitor.
Day 4 & 5
In an offshoot of the Rift Valley we enter the territory of the Hadzabe - one of the most fascinating and oldest tribes in Africa. They have been inhabiting the area around Lake Eyasi for many thousands of years. The tribe is small, thought to number less than a thousand with only a few hundred still living the traditional lifestyle. We will build our camp close to their village to spend some time with the tribe. This could involve collecting tubers and edible berries, learning about the medicinal uses of plants, including the ones they use to make the poison to bring down bigger game. Perhaps you will go on an expedition following the honey guide bird to collect honey from a wild hive or make more arrows (a seemingly endless task as arrows get lost on the hunt) or maybe visit the special tree where the bow wood is sourced. Having made arrows, you could try your hand at archery and see how incredibly hard the bows are to draw and how difficult it is to hit the target! As the evening draws in the Hadza will often start dancing and always welcome anyone who wants to join in. Finally return to the camp for the night.
Day 6, 7 & 8
The luxurious Pembezoni Camp is located at the heart of the huge Serengeti National Park. The seasonal camp switches its position two times a year and therefore it offers you the best place to see the famous big five and other fascinating animals. From June to November the camp is located at the Grumetti River near Seronera before moving to the Naabi Hill in December for the following six months to watch the migration of the animals. Because of these seasonal organisations it is important to have just a minimal impact to the environment but to offer you a wonderful holiday in a luxurious atmosphere. Immerse yourself in the adventure of Africa by discovering the wide range of the Serengeti during a captivating game grive during the day. In the evening you can relax at the bonfire place or in the open mess tent after an exciting day where you saw many impressing species. You can watch the sundown at the evening or the starry sky during the night. The Magic of Pembezoni Camp will inspire you!
Day 9
Leaving the security of the game viewing tracks, we head off road into the wilderness walking areas. These areas have not been visited for nearly 50 years except by the occasional ranger patrol. They offer a view of the Serengeti as it was. Serengeti means endless plains. And this is because you will not find hills or mountains, but the plains prevail. The Serengeti is famous for the wildebeest migration which sweeps through the plains in a huge arc to give birth to their offspring in the early part of the year. These grasslands are also home to predators waiting to pick off the young or lame. Your day will take you in search of the concentrations of game and offer the opportunity to witness this vast spectacle up close. Serengeti is home to lions, cheetahs, leopards, hyenas, vultures, hippos, giraffes, elephants, zebras, wildebeests, buffalos, warthogs, impalas, gazelles, topis, elands, and many more spectacular types of bird life. Our camp will move with us over the next 5 days as we explore the Serengeti National Park, so needs to be light enough to pack up, move and re-erect in a day. The accommodation is in dome tents with aluminium beds, toilets and showers are shared between tents. We still have our large, airy, bug-proof mess tents and the same great waiter served meals.
Day 10
A full day of walking – we will set off early in the morning and stop for lunch in the heat of the day under a shady tree or a cool overhang. Walking in the Serengeti is not about covering huge distances, it is about moving slowly as not to disturb the wildlife, peering around a rock kopje to see a herd of impala grazing – oblivious to our presence, sitting above a waterhole to watch as the game come down to drink. Furthermore, it is about enjoying the smaller pleasures – finding out about the traditional medicinal properties of a tree, following the Honey Guide bird as it leads us to a hive and on occasion getting our hearts racing as we stalk the larger more dangerous game –buffalo and elephant– or even perhaps lion.
Day 11
Unlocking the secrets of this magical area, we follow the tracks to discover the spring that never dries even at the hottest time of the year. Small glades with the flush of sweet grass sometimes offer the opportunity to spot porcupines dragging old bones into a cave. We will overnight in the Wilderness Camp again.
Day 12
Our final day of walking – wandering amongst the towering rock kopjes that dot the area, finding the spot where the elephants dig for water in the river beds or perhaps coming upon a lion kill. We will go back to our Wilderness Camp for a final night of relaxing around the camp fire under the vast, star studded, African sky, listening to lions roar at each other across the plains as we settle down to sleep.
Day 13
We will drive back out of our wilderness area to the airstrip to catch the scheduled flight back to civilization in Arusha. Then you have the choice between either have lunch in town with a chance for some shopping before moving on to day rooms at KIA Lodge, having a farewell dinner before going off to the airport for the flight home or take a connecting flight to Zanzibar or the mainland coast for some beach time.
